The Taylors: We ran out of time

When it became obvious that the floodwaters would reach the house, the Taylors loaded as much as they could in a truck. Because of a previous flood encounter, they had flood insurance and were able to rebuild.

We Ran Out Of Time

It had been raining for like a week.

The last night is when they said the rains just really came down and that was before I went to bed, the water was still behind the banks, still where it was supposed to be.

Well, we noticed it about 4:30 that morning.

Water was actually over the top of this fence here and coming towards us on this left side of the fence and also coming from the front side.

Probably about four hours after that, basically we were overtaken, water started going in the house.

We got some friends over here and we just started loading up a truck and got out as much as we could, pictures and things, but we just ran out of time.

Six hours after we left, water was over the roof of the house. And this is basically what we found here.

I don’t think you truly understand it unless you go through it.

Because I think a fire would have been better because fire would have just took everything and gone – you wouldn’t have had to look at it all.

But we just would pull stuff out and have to clean it up and you would see things that we knew couldn’t save and it just meant a lot to me, but there’s nothing I could do about it.

Well, we were flooded out about four years ago and we did not have flood insurance.

Didn’t even think anything about it, ‘cause my parents had lived here for 30 years and had never flooded.

I called the insurance company and they’re like, sorry, there’s nothing we can do.

You have to have flood insurance for it to cover.

So with this time we did have flood insurance and we were able to get some stuff out, but we’re still able to basically rebuild and live a good life.

I mean without the flood insurance, I mean you’re in a hole and it’s hard to get out of it.

I don’t really care if I ever live on top of a mountain somewhere, I will have flood insurance. Back to top
