Community leaders are key
Local officials, representatives of homeowners associations, and other community leaders will be on the front lines to provide information. Property owners in your community will ask questions about why levees are being provisionally accredited and why new flood hazard maps carry a label encouraging the purchase of flood insurance. Arming community leaders with the facts about flood insurance and good information about the current designation of the levees will help them better answer questions.
Flood insurance is strongly recommended
While the Provisionally Accredited Levee designation will not affect flood insurance requirements, a levee failure has the potential to cause catastrophic flooding. The materials in this section will help leaders in your community communicate the risks associated with living near a levee, the timetable for a more permanent determination of levee designation and the importance of flood insurance. Additional information about low-cost Preferred Risk Policies is also provided.
