Press Releases

Washington, D.C., Barhorst Insurance Group (Houston, TX), IKM Agency (Harvey Cedars, NJ), and John O. Bronson Agency (Sacramento, CA) were named FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program's Flood Insurance Agencies of the Year at the annual National Flood Conference May 7 - 10, 2006 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These agencies were lauded for their efforts over the past year for providing excellent customer service, helping thousands of homeowners understand their flood risk and offering options for home and business protection through flood insurance coverage.

"Flood insurance agents serve a vital role in ensuring that Americans are properly covered against flooding -- and these agencies are at the top of that list. Their continued dedication and hard work on behalf of the NFIP is evident through their public outreach efforts and quality service to policyholders," said David Maurstad, Federal Insurance Administrator and Mitigation Division Director of FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program.

Each year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recognizes outstanding insurance industry partners and others with special awards for their contributions to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). These three insurance agencies were recognized for their superior efforts to:

  • Achieve superior flood insurance policy growth
  • Implement innovative marketing strategies
  • Participate in flood awareness activities
  • Adhere to established underwriting guidelines

Barhorst Insurance Group, a Houston-based Nationwide Insurance agency, was established in 1993, and today, is the largest in Texas, with 15 agencies across the state and an extensive portfolio of insurance options, including flood protection.

In 1992 Inman, Kircher, McBride Agency, Inc. trading as IKM Insurance Agency of Harvey Cedars, NJ acquired the insurance operation of Joseph W. Inman Realty and Insurance. IKM Insurance Agency has successfully grown the insurance business acquired from the Inman Estate. IKM has become one of the Nation's leading writers of federally-backed flood insurance. IKM writes all kinds of personal and commercial property and liability insurance.

John O. Bronson Agency is one of the oldest and largest insurance agencies in the Sacramento area. They have been in business since 1888 as an independent company representing a large number of top-rated insurance carriers. John O. Bronson offers a large number of business and personal lines of insurance to cover the insurance needs of their community.

Flood insurance is affordable and available through 88 insurance companies in more than 21,000 participating communities nationwide. Everyone can purchase flood insurance renters, business owners, and homeowners. The average flood insurance policy is around $500 a year. For flood insurance rating purposes, a primary residence is a building that will be lived in by the insured or the insured's spouse for at least 80 percent of the 365 days following the policy effective date. If the building will be lived in for less than 80 percent of the policy year, it is considered to be a non-primary residence.
