About the National Flood Insurance Program

Flood protection for individuals and communities across the U.S.
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides insurance to help reduce the impact of floods for individuals and communities. The NFIP provides flood insurance to property owners, renters and businesses, and having this coverage helps them recover faster when floodwaters recede. NFIP flood insurance policies cover buildings, their contents or both.
Congress created the NFIP in 1968 with two goals: protect people from flooding and reduce future flood damage. The program is a partnership between public governments and private institutions. Insurance policies are administered by FEMA, and are sold and serviced by a network of more than 547 insurance companies and the NFIP Direct.
Today, the NFIP protects nearly 5 million policy holders in more than 22,500 communities nationwide.
